A Note from the DEDP Board

Dear DEDP Parents,

 

            Hard to believe that the end of the year is fast approaching.  Before discussing the Parent Board, I want to alert folks that the DEDP Amazon link is active on the DEDP webpage, http://www.dedpbrookline.org/ .  You’ve heard this before, if you start your Amazon shopping through this link, everything you purchase will result in a donation of up to 5% of your purchase to DEDP.  Please bookmark this page and start your Amazon shopping at DEDP’s revamped website!

 

            The Driscoll Extended Day Program (“DEDP”) board is now seeking applications for new board members, to begin service next year starting in September 2012.   We welcome and encourage any parent who is interested to apply.   The board is an energetic group of parents whose children are enrolled in the program.

 

            The board supports the mission and vision of the program.  Specific areas include overseeing policy and high-level procedures, approving the program budget, defining or approving any changes to the business model, providing support to the director and staff, fundraising, and overall advocacy for the organization.

 

            Board members serve one-year terms, which are extendible through re-election, with a term limit of four years.  Typically, board members serve multiple terms, and we seek persons who can commit to additional terms beyond the first year, which helps ensure a more consistent board leadership.

 

            Requirements for board membership include:

 

  • A child currently enrolled in the program
  • Attendance at monthly, weekday evening board meetings
  • Ability to devote other time to work on board business, meet with other board members or DEDP management, in addition to monthly board meetings.  Board members contribute roughly 3-6 hours per month of service (including board meetings).
  • Ability to make impartial recommendations and decisions in support of the overall program
  • Preferred expertise or experience in these areas (but by no means required):

o   Project management

o   Financial management

o   Human Resources

o   Fundraising

o   Communications

o   Legal

o   Non-profit experience

            The board reviews applications and will nominate applicants.  The slate of nominations for the 2012-2013 academic year will be presented for election by DEDP parents at the Annual Meeting at the end of the 2012 school year on June  11.  For more information we encourage you to please feel free to speak with Abbie Fennell or any of the current board members listed below.

 

            Serving on the DEDP Board is a highly enriching experience. We hope you will be interested in sharing the responsibility for the governance of a program that is vital to the daily enrichment of our children.
