Happy New Year!

Dear families,

Happy New Year!  It’s hard to believe we are just about half way through January. There continues to be much joy at DEDP and we seem to be having typical New England weather.  We arrived back after December break with very cold temperatures and snow, last week we had a warm up, and the current temperature says it’s 58 degrees. The week ahead will bring back cooler temperatures. Please remember to send your child to DEDP prepared for the weather.  We do go outside in cold weather and snowpants/ boots can provide warmth even when there is no snow on the ground.  It is helpful to mark all of your child’s clothing (jackets, hats, gloves, boots, snowpants) as it’s easier for us to find when they are lost.

Thank you for your excellent communication with our program. Each day we receive the absent list from the Driscoll School office and track over 100 children who attend extended day. Remember to notify the DEDP by email before 12:30 p.m. or by phone after 12:30 p.m., if your child isn’t attending or has a different pick up person. We have been receiving many emails during program hours and ask that you call and leave a message as we often don’t have time to check email while the program is in operation. Please make sure that you communicate with us about your child as Driscoll staff are very busy in the transition at the end of the school day. Thank you for your assistance in helping our afternoons run smoothly.

Stephanie Goodman our wonderful K-2 teacher was offered a teaching position at a private school in Brighton in late December teaching English and Social Studies. We are excited for her as this has been a goal of hers for some time. Stephanie will continue to work at DEDP on Tuesday afternoons. Currently we have two amazing substitutes helping in our K-2 program. Marissa Perry a para in Ben Fishkin’s kindergarten class and  Alicia Perry who graduated last spring from BU and works part time at the ICA.    We are interviewing candidates for this position and hope to have a teacher on board by the first week in February.

We will be sending out information regarding our full days programs during February vacation later this week.  DEDP is closed on Monday, January 21 in honor of Martin Luther King Day and Monday, February 18 in honor of Presidents Day. Thank you for taking the time to read this email.

With warm regards,   Abbie and Vinny

Ice Skating on Wednesdays-Grades 1-5

We are excited to announce the opportunity to go ice skating with DEDP on Wednesdays as we join the other Brookline Extended Day Programs in renting the Cleveland Circle MDC Rink.  On Wednesdays beginning January 9 through March 6, children who attend DEDP on Wednesdays in Grades 1-5 will have the opportunity to go ice skating.  We leave DEDP by 2:35 p.m. and return around 5 p.m.  Children who are not  interested in skating will remain at DEDP on those days for regular programming.

Children need to have some experience ice skating.  Unfortunately, we are not able to provide formal instruction and therefore encourage children to use this as an opportunity to practice what they have learned.  Children must bring skates from home and a helmet. All children are required to bring a helmet and wear it ice skating
We ask that children go ice skating for the 8 weeks so we are able to maintain adequate ratios at DEDP and on the field trip.
THERE IS NO SKATE RENTAL AT THE RINK THIS YEAR.  DEDP has a few pairs ofskates so if you are interested in borrowing a pair for the season please let us know.  We are also looking for skates and helmets that your child might have outgrown so we can offer this opportunity for all children who are interested.
Each week we can send up to 25 children and 3 staff.   Please use the link below and register your child by Wednesday, January 2  for ice skating.      If you have any additional questions or concerns please speak with Abbie or Vinny or email driscollprogram@gmail.com

The Buzzz at DEDP

This week at DEDP there has been a lot of excitement around a new community service project called Free Rice.  Freerice.com is a website produced by World Hunger Programme, the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide.  Extended Day children in grades 3-5 from 5-5:45pm will be able to go on the wbesite and answer vocabulary questions and earn rice that is distributed by the World Hunger Programme.  The students have been tracking their donated rice each day on a bulletin board across from the DEDP kitchen.  This project has been a wonderful way of combining community service, teamwork, and learning.  Children have been eager to practice vocabulary while helping (albeit in a small way) to feed the hungry.

If your child has an interest in participating at home, they can log into DEDP's account on www.freerice.com.  Our login username is DEDP and the password is freerice.

Like in the children's book "One Grain of Rice" by Demi, a single grain of rice may not seem like much, initially.  However, our plan is to watch the first grain multiply while the DEDP children learn the value of growing their hearts and minds.  Thanks for helping donate rice to people in need!

A Note from the Director

Dear DEDP Families,

Welcome to the Driscoll School Extended Day Program for the 2012-2013 school year! I would like to extend a special welcome to all of our new families, especially in pre-kindergarten and  kindergarten.

Please take a few moments to review the following important information about DEDP

* Please notify the program either in  writing or by telephone if your child:

      a) Will not be attending the program for any reason on a particular day

      b) Will be arriving late for any reason

      c) Will be picked up by someone other than the authorized person(s)

Email is a great way to get information to us at any time.  We ask that you email us before noon on a given day as we are not at the computer during program hours.  After 12:15 p.m. please call us at 617-738-4632.   We check the answering machine approximately every 20-40 minutes.

* Medication -DEDP staff can only administer medication if we have a signed Medical Consent Form available on our website dedpbrookline.org or DEDP offfice.  The medication must be in its original container with directions from the physician. No medication will be dispensed unless these requirements are met. If your child has an epi pen and/or inhaler there is an additional DEDP form to be completed.

Sign Out - Please make sure to sign your child out each day at pick up time.  The sign out clipboard during outside time are located on the inside fence on the playground.  At all other times the sign out clipboards are located on the tables in cafeteria. The outside door leading into the cafeteria is open for extended day pick up after 2:20 p.m.

Home Toy Policy- We are requesting that children do not bring toys or games from home. It is very difficult to keep track of these types of things and they often end up lost or broken.

Homework Time-Children in grades 2-5 have the opportunity to participate in homework time directly after snack time. This is a time when the room is kept quiet and a teacher is available to assist when necessary.    Homework time will begin on Monday, September 10 .  contract must be completed for your child to participate in homework time.

Parent Communication-Our teaching staff welcomes your input, questions and concerns will remain in touch with you regarding your child’s progress. Please note that it is difficult for teachers to engage in long conversations with parents when they are supervising groups of children. If you would like to speak more than briefly with a teacher about your child, we ask that you call DEDP and leave a message and the teacher will return your call, or speak withdirector who will assist you. We really do appreciate your understanding with this issue. Parent conferences will be held twice a year . If you would like to request conference at any other time, please feel free to ask for one to be scheduled.

*Cubbies and Hooks -All DEDP cubbies and hooks are located in the hallways of Driscoll School.  We ask that children use them during DEDP hours and ask that children don't leave items in their cubbies or on their hooks during non DEDP hours.  Children at DEDP do not have assigned cubbies or hooks.

Late Policy     A DEDP staff person waits with children until  the last child is picked up. Anyone arriving after  6 p.m. will be charged a $1.00 per minute. If you are running late after 6 pm.  it is very helpful if you call ahead and let the staff know.   This way we can reassure your child (or children) that an adult will soon be here for them. Please note that calling ahead does not excuse you from the late night fee.  It is a very good idea to have a few backup people you can call to pick up your child in the event that you encounter some unexpected delay (such as atraffic accident or poor weather conditions).  Our Pre-K program ends at 2:15 p.m. as the staff prepares for picking up kindergartners at 2:20 p.m,  the late policy applies to the Pre-K program after 2:15 p.m.

*Snacks and BirthdaysDEDP provides a daily snack for all children in the program. We are totally nut free in all of the food that we serve. Sometimes children are hungry later in the afternoon. You are welcome to pack an additional nut free snack in your child’s lunchbox or backpack if you would like to do so. Due to food allergies, DEDP does not allow special snacks or treats to be sent in for birthdays or other occasions. If you would like to donate a book to DEDP in honor of their birthday you are more than welcome to do so.

*Tuition Payments- All tuition payments go directly to our bookkeeper, Linda Chessman.   Full Day Programs and Supplemental Care payment should be given directly to the DEDP office.   Please contact Linda regarding payment and tuition at linda@chessman.net.

If you have any questions or concerns about any of this information, please feel free to call or stop by the office and speak with me. You will also find more information regarding the program in the  DEDP Parent Handbook which can be found on our website. Please let us know if you prefer a paper copy of the handbook.     Again, I look forward working with all of you in the year ahead.  Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Summer News!

Dear families,
I am excited to share with you some upcoming space changes for 2012-2013.   I have been working closely with Principal Cook and Driscoll staff over the last month regarding DEDP space.   These changes are a result of increased school population in addition to increased enrollment at DEDP.  DEDP is committed to serving all families in need of after school care.   The "Crib" isn't large enough this upcoming year  to accommodate extended day children in grades 3-5 for free play.   We are redesigning the stage and small room in 101 to be a free play space for grades 3-5.  We are thrilled that the  dedicated space is an opportunity for more ongoing projects.   Our kindergarten through grade 2 will be using Barry's Pre-K room (Room 115 near the gym) as their free play space.   Barry has been so kind in welcoming DEDP.   The spacious room has storage in addition to a storage closet across the hall.
We are not alone in shared spaces and space changes as almost every after school program in Brookline are facing these challenges.  DEDP operates as an independent organization and the Town of Brookline continues to partner with extended day by giving us space rent free.   Since we don't pay rent we are able to offer affordable tuition and give staff benefits and competitive salaries.
I made the decision to wait to share this information with the DEDP community until the plans were finalized.  Please share this information with your child as it's important for returning children to know about the changes.    I will be posting some pictures on the website of the room designs by mid-August.   I look forward to seeing all of you in September!
                                                               With regards,  Abbie

What A Year!

Dear families,

There is a sense of excitement at DEDP as children and staff reflect on their milestones during this past year. This progress can be seen in clubs, projects, special days, newsletters, and family events. It has been an amazing year!

As we complete our year-end activities, field day, 2nd grade step up day, 5th grade graduation, we have mixed emotions.  While the excitement mounts as summer vacation approaches, we are also saddened to say goodbye to friends and valued members of our DEDP community.  While saying goodbye to friends for the summer, we must also say farewell to staff who will not be returning to DEDP in the

fall. We extend our best wishes to Aaron Gray and Alicia Antunes who will be moving on. We thank them for their hard work and dedication to the DEDP program and wish them all the best.

Carlie Espinosa our fall NU Co-op and current teacher will continue on our staff next year.   Kris Cook our current NU Co-op will be graduating next December and will return to DEDP in January 2013 in place of a NU Co-op student.  We are excited for them to rejoin our staff!

We also thank DEDP parent, Genevieve Preer for her two years on the DEDP Parent Board.  She spent two years as DEDP secretary and worked on many projects such as the tag sale and CBC cards.    Bryan Decker will be continuing on the board but will be finishing up his term as board chair.  We thank him for his tireless efforts and leadership over the last two years.

Without the support of amazing DEDP staff, Vinny LaFrazia, DEDP Parent Board, Principal Cook, Mr. Youkilis, and Driscoll staff, a successful year would not be possible.  I thank everyone who has contributed to DEDP this year.

I wish all of you a happy, restful, and enjoyable summer!

With regards,

Abbie Fennell

DEDP Director

A Note from the DEDP Board

Dear DEDP Parents,

Hard to believe that the end of the year is fast approaching.  Before discussing the Parent Board, I want to alert folks that the DEDP Amazon link is active on the DEDP webpage, http://www.dedpbrookline.org/ .  You’ve heard this before, if you start your Amazon shopping through this link, everything you purchase will result in a donation of up to 5% of your purchase to DEDP.  Please bookmark this page and start your Amazon shopping at DEDP’s revamped website!

The Driscoll Extended Day Program (“DEDP”) board is now seeking applications for new board members, to begin service next year starting in September 2012.   We welcome and encourage any parent who is interested to apply.   The board is an energetic group of parents whose children are enrolled in the program.

The board supports the mission and vision of the program.  Specific areas include overseeing policy and high-level procedures, approving the program budget, defining or approving any changes to the business model, providing support to the director and staff, fundraising, and overall advocacy for the organization.

Board members serve one-year terms, which are extendible through re-election, with a term limit of four years.  Typically, board members serve multiple terms, and we seek persons who can commit to additional terms beyond the first year, which helps ensure a more consistent board leadership.

            Requirements for board membership include:

  • A child currently enrolled in the program
  • Attendance at monthly, weekday evening board meetings
  • Ability to devote other time to work on board business, meet with other board members or DEDP management, in addition to monthly board meetings.  Board members contribute roughly 3-6 hours per month of service (including board meetings).
  • Ability to make impartial recommendations and decisions in support of the overall program
  • Preferred expertise or experience in these areas (but by no means required):

o   Project management

o   Financial management

o   Human Resources

o   Fundraising

o   Communications

o   Legal

o   Non-profit experience

A brief list of questions for applicants follows this letter.   We request applications please be submitted by Friday, May 18, 2012.  You may submit an application by going to the DEDP website dedpbrookline.org or using the following link  https://dedp.wufoo.com/forms/dedp-parent-board-application/

The board reviews applications and will nominate applicants.  The slate of nominations for the 2012-2013 academic year will be presented for election by DEDP parents at the Annual Meeting at the end of the 2012 school year on June  11.  For more information we encourage you to please feel free to speak with Abbie Fennell or any of the current board members listed below.

Serving on the DEDP Board is a highly enriching experience. We hope you will be interested in sharing the responsibility for the governance of a program that is vital to the daily enrichment of our children.

On behalf of the DEDP board,

Kind Regards,

Bryan Decker

DEDP CLOSING AT 4 PM TODAY

Dear Families,

Please note the Driscoll Extended Day (DEDP) will be closing at 4 pm today due
to the predicted weather conditions and safety risk expected for this afternoon.
We are sorry to make this last minute decision but feel it is necessary as a winter weather advisory has already been issued.

We encourage you to leave your school, home or work early due to the
very slippery and dangerous driving conditions that are predicted for this afternoon.  Please use extreme caution and give yourself enough time since your family's safety is
our main concern.  Sorry for any inconvenience regarding this last
minute message.  This may be a great time to contact your family,
friends and neighbors to aid in the pickup today.

Kindly,
Abbie and the DEDP Teaching Team
